AR Mobile App for United Engine Corporation for an Exhibition

Customer's background

UEC Corporation (United Engine Corporation) is a company that manufactures engines for military and civil aviation, space programs, gas turbine units of various capacities for the production of electric and thermal energy, gas pumping and ship gas turbine units.

Task

To develop an AR mobile app that will demonstrate the infrastructure and features of the gas pumping unit (GPA-25) and gas turbine unit (GTA-25), with exhibition arrangements in a simple and fun way. The AR content shall be projected over the GPA-25 and GTA-25 architectural models.

Solution

The Ariseum team has created the mobile app based on the ARKit platform, a powerful technology that allows to recognize dimensions of the surrounding space and its lighting conditions in order to integrate virtual objects into reality as most reliable as possible.

We have developed the unique animated interface design based on the corporate identity of UEC.

In order to reveal in detail all the main characteristics of the two units and the gas transportation process, our team has implemented 2 modes in the app for each model:

  • GPA-25: Explosion diagram and Logic game modes
  • GTA-25: Explosion diagram and Logic game modes

In addition to the GPA-25 and GTA-25 models sent by the customer, we have prepared frame-type markers that are read by the app.

When pointing the tablet at one of the unit's models, two menus are displayed on the screen, the explosion diagram and the logic game. Both functions work in the AR mode. The explosion diagram shows the key elements of the unit while in the game model, the user shall place all the of the unit environment’s elements in the correct order.

For example, around the GPA-25 model, the player places a gas pipeline, a boiler room, purification plants, air-cooling units, etc. Around the gas turbine unit, the user distributes such infrastructure elements as a waste heat exchanger, a steam turbine unit with a generator, and a reducer.

Also, our animators have animated the unit’s and gas flows’ parts.

The app is implemented in Russian and English, as well as Spanish and Chinese available. From the tablet, the user can project the image on the plasma panel in real time using AppleTV.

How it works

The user should have the tablet with the mobile app. If desired, they can study information about UEC, and then choose one of 4 modes.

When pointing the device at the GPA-25 model, the explosion diagram and logic game modes reproduce. If the user points the tablet at the GTA-25, two similar modes will produce.

1. GPA-25 – Explosion diagram mode

The user points the tablet at the GPA-25 model. Along the beautifully especial effected screen sides during AR, there are the following unit elements: An air purifier, a ventilation system, an exhaust system, an electrical unit, a muffler, a gas turbine engine, and a compressor.

The user selects one of the units and can interact with it. The object is largely displayed which can be rotated around its axis, and its brief characteristics are described on the screen.

2. GPA-25 - Logic game mode

The user selects the GPA-25 Logic game mode and points the tablet at the model. During AR mode, along the perimeter, cells appear. In 2.5 minutes, the user shall place all the elements around the gas-pumping unit, the air-cooling unit, the gas treatment plants, the gas pipeline, the gas fire-fighting station, the closed distribution device, the boiler room, the production and power supply unit, and the lightning conductor. The goal is to arrange all the complex components in the right order and ensure the gas distribution through the main gas pipeline. As a result, the user can see how much time they have spent on arranging all of the elements.

When all the missing links are successfully assembled, the model lights up in azure glow, and the unit is under commission. Since the fuel flows underground, the user can see how the gas is distributed through the main gas pipeline with animated streams over the buildings.

3. GTA-25 – Explosion diagram mode

The user points the tablet at the GTA-25 model. Along the screen sides in AR mode, the following element units are displayed: An air purifier (AP), a ventilation system, an exhaust system, an electrical unit, a muffler, a gas turbine engine, a turbo generator, and a reducer. By selecting one of the parts, the user can interact with it, analyze it from different angles and figure out the main parameters of the device.

4. GTA-25 - Logic game mode

The user selects the GTA-25 Logic game mode and points the tablet's camera at the model. Cells will appear on the perimeter. In 2.5 minutes, the user shall place all the devices around the gas turbine unit, air-cooling unit, gas treatment plants, the gas pipeline, the steam turbine unit with generator, the waste heat exchanger, the air condenser, the power lines, and the energy consumer.

When the unit environment is successfully assembled, the unit model lights up in azure glow. The user observes how gas is distributed through the main gas pipeline with animated streams. Through the central gas pipeline, gas is supplied to the Unit Gas Conditioning Station then flows to the GTA. Back from the GTA, the electric current flows through the circuits to the CCGT (Combined Cycle Gas Turbine) Unit body, and then to the ALC (Automatic Level Control). From the ALC, fuel is delivered to residential buildings or to the plant via power lines.

Equipment

2 iPad Pro tablets, 2 tablet racks, Wi-Fi router and 2 Apple TVs

Result

The app has become an excellent marketing solution for UEC. It can be presented at exhibitions to VIPs, heads of various production enterprises, experts, and students of specialized universities. These potential clients can study in detail the unit’s characteristics, its environment elements, and the gas distribution process. The customer highly appreciated the graphics, accurate drawings of the units’ 3D models, the entire infrastructure, as well as the spectacular bright animation.
