AR Stand at the IX International Maritime Defence Show for Armalit

Ariseum team has developed an interactive AR stand for Armalit Corporation at the International Maritime Defence Show.

IMDS 2019 is the international exhibition of military products. It was attended by 50 official delegations from 30 countries.

Customer's background

Armalit Corporation is a modern production complex with a century-old history in the field of ship valves production.

Task

To develop a mobile app that will allow visitors to open and close the butterfly valve mechanisms and ball valve installed on the stand. When the valve is opened, water shall flow through the virtual pipes, and when it is closed, water shall be blocked. Additionally, it is required to show where the piping valves are installed on a 3D model of a warship and display technical information.

Solution

Using state-of-the-art ARCore and ARKit technologies, we have developed the app that transmits the state of the shut-off valves in real time. An innovative 3D model of a warship, pipeline, and valves was developed. In order to display the water flow, we have created a virtual mass of thousands of particles that mimic the physical properties of water. All these elements have been assembled into a single system and presented in a form of a convenient and easy-to-use interface in the Armalit style.

How it works

The stand consisted of three structures:  A ball shut-off valve and two modern butterfly valves. A visitor to the stand could look inside the ship's system, complete the pipeline on the tablet screen, and control water flows by pointing the tablet's camera at the shut-off valve in the AR mode. The guests opened and closed the valve and watched the water flow through the virtual pipes. Using the app, it could also be possible to learn how the ship is assembled from the inside. When pressing the suitable button, the 3D model of the ship is displayed on the tablet’s screen in the AR mode with specific marked points of the shut-off valves installation. By clicking on the hotspots, users could get acquainted with the ship's equipment and its main characteristics.

Equipment

At the exhibition stand, one IPad Pro tablet was installed aiming at the model of the shut-off valves. Another tablet was in the users’ hands, so they could walk around the valves from different sides. An Apple TV set-top box projects images from the tablet's camera to a large plasma screen reflected on the wall of the stand.

Result

The use of the AR technology at the stand clearly demonstrated the capabilities of piping shut-off valves manufactured by Armalit and provoked an active interest of the visitors to the stand. Interaction with complex products in the AR game format filled the guests with vivid impressions. The Armalit's products attracted the attention of high-ranking Navy officials. The Deputy Сommander-in-Сhief of the Navy for armaments, and Vice Admiral Igor Mukhametshin, showed interest in the Armalit's app.
